The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells has inspired all manner of films, music and artwork. Each one gives a different impression of the Fighting-Machines featured in the novel. Perhaps it is because the description of the machines given in the novel is particularly vague that the machines are so diverse in appearance across the spectrum of spin-offs.

In particular, the appearance of the generator of the Heat-Ray varies across the spectrum of representations. Jeff Wayne’s TWOTW Musical Version artwork depicts the Heat-Ray generator as being a pathetic protrusion from the “mouth” of the Fighting-Machine, and while the Machine itself undoubtedly looks excellent, this is disappointing! The novel, and even the narration in the musical version, explains that the ray comes from “a funnel”. The machines can “flourish the funnel high in the air”, something that is not possible if the projector of the Heat-Ray is attached directly to the body of the Machine.

I thought I’d have a go at sketching some Machines and Heat-Rays. I was going to draw a 3-view, which I may well do eventually…
