Chanson du Jour January 31, 2006

Le chanson du jour aujourd’hui est “The Cinema Show” de Genesis.

The Cinema Show is the penultimate track on the Genesis prog masterpiece, “Selling England By The Pound”. It begins with a tale of a man and woman who will, ultimately, meet each other at some point during an evening and “make their beds”. This is all well and good, but then the song abandons them entirely and focuses instead on the mythical figure “Father” Tiresias.
Anyway. The meaning is there if you want it. This is a truly lovely song.

“Firth of Fifth”, another song on Selling England, has a better (read: “absolutely storming!!”) main theme but its verses are weak in comparison to the “verses” or main song body of “Cinema Show”. Both are brilliant songs, though.

The theme at around 7:15 is beautiful. It could have returned at 9.30, soaring even more triumphantly than at first. But it doesn’t, and the song fizzles out rather than reaching any kind of climax. An opportunity missed, perhaps, but this doesn’t detract too much from the greatness.
