How interesting it is, indeed, to consider that it is only St. John whose pronunciation has been abbreviated for its use as a name.

St. SinjunA ponderous St. Sinjun.

For example, “Charles Sinjun (St John) Smythe” is abbreviated, but “St James” is not shortened to “Sinjums”, and “St Christopher” is not shortened to “Sincstfer”.

“St. Paul” is not shortened to “Sinpul” for almost-obvious reasons.

Which reminds me: I must change my middle name to Danger, and my surname to St. Smith. It’s pronounced “Synth”, actually…

My ex husband’s middle name is St John and it is indeed pronounced Sinjun – caused no end of hilarity at our wedding when he had to say his full name, as most people didn’t know what it was 🙂
